Emergent curriculum, Interest Web, and Reggio Emilia approach

Creative Munchkins Childcare Centre uses an emergent curriculum inspired by Regio Emilia’s approach. In the Reggio Emilia approach, teachers create the curriculum around children’s interests. This is referred to as Emergent Curriculum. An Emergent curriculum encourages children to make decisions for themselves which allows them to experience the world in their own way. Lesson plans/program planning done by staff is focused on child-directed hands-on activities. Our main emphasis is on learning through play.  It is “child lead” learning. Implementing an Emergent Curriculum successfully within a classroom requires creativity, flexibility, observation, documentation, and patience and CMC is proud to have all these components. The Centre’s staff and environment are flexible and offer flexibility to support each child’s interests, needs, and abilities. For programs we offer, please check the programs tab.

The Creative Munchkins Childcare Center is proud to have a team of knowledgeable, devoted, and passionate employees that work hard to deliver a quality program for each child’s better future. All of our employees have met the minimal standards set by the provincial government (Alberta Childcare Services). All educators and employees are obliged to submit a complete and recent criminal background check, including a vulnerable sector screening. Also, all center employees are certified in CPR and first aid training.

At Creative Munchkins daycare, we place a high priority on the protection and safety of all the children, parents, and staff. To safeguard the children in our care, we have strong standards in place that must be adhered to. By teaching kids safety rules and performing monthly fire drills, our center aims to offer a secure atmosphere. If a child gets hurt, the staff will fill up an accident report, which will be signed by the staff, program supervisor, and the parent or legal guardian.

Daily check-ins and check-outs are required for security and bookkeeping reasons. Every day, children must be checked in and out of the facility in order to comply with licensing standards.

All of the doors in our center are always locked and require an access fob to access them. At the time of enrolment, each family receives an access fob. It’s crucial that everyone uses their own access fob they were given. Sharing an access fob is strictly forbidden! The doorbell can be used to contact someone in the front office by guests or anybody without an access fob. They will need permission before they can buzz into the building. In case calling the center by doorbell proves to be problematic, the phone number is also posted outside. High-quality cameras are installed around the center for surveillance, and every room has a phone in case staff members need assistance.

The Centre will release child/children only to authorized persons on the registration form unless the parent has notified the program supervisor in person or in writing. Advance notification in writing must be given if a parent needs to permit someone who is not on the pick-up list to temporarily pick up their child.

Each guest must enter their name and reason for visiting in the visitor log at the front entry. Picture identification is necessary for all unexpected guests in order to protect everyone’s safety.

Transition is a situation of great change in which children have to move into a new environment and adapt to an unfamiliar setting which involves meeting new peers and caregivers and taking over new responsibilities.

For children and families who are new to the center our transitioning procedure for them is as follows:

  1. On the first day, a parent and a child stay at the Centre for an hour. The parent is asked to stay with his/her child maximum of an hour. The parent is encouraged to participate in his/her child’s activities.
  2. On The Second day, the child and parent will again stay for an hour at the center but the parent can stay this time only for 40 minutes with his/her child in the room and then is asked to leave the child at the center with us for 10 to 15 minutes to see how he/she likes it.
  3. On The Third day, again parent and child will stay an hour at the center, and the parent is encouraged to leave for 30 minutes.
  4. On The Fourth day, again parent and child will stay an hour at the center, and the parent is encouraged to leave for 45 minutes.

Every child and his/her needs are unique, some kids need less, and some need more time to adjust to a new environment but we believe our above transition procedure will allow enough time for a child to make his /her transition smooth and less stressful.

Creative Munchkins Childcare Centre always encourages and maintains an open-door policy for parental inputs, suggestions, and ideas, which respect individual lifestyles, values, beliefs, rights, and opinions. As an essential component of our program, parents are regularly encouraged to provide their suggestions and to make recommendations regarding the quality of the program to room staff or program supervisors through emails or in the suggestion box in the lobby. The Center promotes parents’ involvement by offering the right setting, platform, and opportunity so they may fully engage and support their child’s growth and social advancement alongside us.

By offering young children a variety of nutritious foods, restricting junk food and sugary drinks, and enlisting parents to do the same at home, Creative Munchkins Childcare promotes good eating habits in children under our care. The Centre provides two nutritious snacks and lunch per day for each child. Sufficient quantities and varieties of food are available. Extra servings are made available for children on request. For the safety and well-being of the children under our care, we are entirely nut-free, and we try our best to work with families whose children have additional dietary sensitivities and allergies. To provide variety and balance our menu is changed seasonally and every four weeks
